Teatro and Culture Circles: Transformative Teacher Education Pedagogies

Join us for a CITED-sponsored conversation, Teatro and Culture Circles: Transformative Teacher Education Pedagogies, with Dr. Jamy A Stillman, associate professor of education equity and cultural diversity and teacher learning, research and practice, as well as director of elementary teacher education at the University of Colorado, Boulder and Dr. Kathryn Struthers Ahmed, assistant professor of childhood literacy education at Hunter College, CUNY.

This conversation will raise questions about teacher educators as linchpins for making teacher education more equity- and community-centered, and about the kinds of learning opportunities teacher educators need in order to fulfill this charge. The talk will argue that equity-oriented transformation in teacher education depends on the preparation of teacher educators—an enterprise that is currently understudied, under-theorized and under-practiced. It will also underscore the particular promises of critical pedagogies, like Freirean Culture Circles and Boalian Theatre of the Oppressed, for preparing asset-oriented teacher educators, particularly given trends in teacher education to value reductive notions of teacher educator knowledge and practice.

The event will be held on 179 Grace Dodge.

Registration is FREE, but tickets are required (and limited)!
